Determination Of Water Content

STANDARD

  • IS :2720 (Part2) 1973

OBJECTIVE

  • To determine water content of soils.

APPARATUS

  • Air tight containers.
  • Balance of capacity 2 kg and sensitivity 0.01 gram.
  • Thermostatically controlled oven of capacity 250 °C.

PROCEDURE

  • Take a representative sample of soil from soil mass.
  • The quantity of soil sample for the purpose shall be as given in Table: 2.2.1.

Table:  Minimum quantity of soil sample to be taken for the test

Size of particle more than 90%
passing IS sieve
Minimum quantity of soil sample
to be taken in grams
425 microns 25
2.00 mm 50
4.75 mm 200
10.00 mm 300
20.00 mm 500
40.00 mm 1000
  • Clean the container, dry and weigh with lid (W1).
  • Take required quantity of soil sample in to the container crumble and place loosely, and weigh (W2) with lid.
  • Place the container in the oven with lid removed and maintain the temperature of oven at 110±5˚C  for a period of 24 ± 1/2 hours .
  • After the specified period, remove the container with the sample from the oven, replace the lid and cool it in  a desiccators.

CALCULATIONS

Water content, (%) =

((W2-W3)/ (W3-W1)) x 100

W1= = Weight of container with lid.
W2 =Weight of container with lid and wet soil.
W3= Weight of container with lid and dry soil.
